Nonoxynol-9: Is it a no-no?

Lots of condoms, lubes, and foams contain spermicide (nonoxynol-9). Nonoxynol-9 is a detergent that kills sperm and germs in a test tube. You can use it to help protect you from getting pregnant or catching STDs if a condom breaks or leaks.

But how safe is nonoxynol-9?

You can get a rash in your vagina, mouth or ass from using nonoxynol-9. Rashes and sores can let in viruses like HIV or hepatitis B. Some people even get a rash on their skin. Test any product with nonoxynol-9 in it before you use it. Don't use nonoxynol-9 if it makes you itchy or sore!

Nonoxynol-9 also washes away the natural layer that protects your vagina from germs. This can cause yeast and bladder infections. If you use nonoxynol-9 often, get regular check-ups -- even if you don't feel a rash. Don't put nonoxynol-9 in your ass.

USE CONDOMS AND
WATER-BASED LUBE
to guard against HIV and STDs like herpes, syphilis, warts or hepatitis B.
