IF THE POLICE WANT TO
TALK TO YOU:

• BE POLITE! Don't fight or swear — even if they are rude.

• Say only your name and address. SAY NOTHING ELSE! Don't go anywhere with the police unless you are under arrest.

• If you are driving a car, you must show your driver's licence, insurance, ownership and give details of any accident. Police can take you for a breathalyzer test.

IF YOU ARE ARRESTED:

• Give your correct name. Co-operate. Don't fight.

• The police have to tell you why you are under arrest.

• SAY NOTHING! Call your lawyer.

• You have the right to have a lawyer even if you have no money, You can call the Brydge's hotline at 631-0566 from the police station and a lawyer will call you back. If you have no money you apply for Legal Aid to pay for your lawyer.

• Anything you say will be used against you.

• Make note of any badge numbers, names, licence plates, car numbers of police officers and witnesses.
