Building a Logging Bridge

Laying the First Log – The sills (on which the span logs sit) are made from the fattest parts of the log. Three of them are stacked in a pyramid against each bank of the creek. They are tied together with steel cable held in with huge steel staples. They are also tied together with "drifts" — three to four foot lengths of steel reinforcing rod, sharped into a spike on one end and driven in with a sledge.
