Building a Log House

The Interior – Here is the finished kitchen, the first floor of the main part of the house. Because there is no need for supporting walls, the entire first floor is a one-room country kitchen. The entire second floor is a one-room master bedroom. If you look closely, to the left of the pink step-stool, you can see the hinges and hardware from an old icebox. My dad hated the idea of an ugly upright refrigerator — so he built an under-the-counter one. The interior was shelled with fibreglass and insulated. The motor is in the crawlspace basement below (so you can't hear it) and the fridge plumbed up through the floor. The shelves roll so you don't have to bend down to get things in and out. All of the cupboards and counters were built by Paul Sorfleet. The electric stove shown here is a 1930s General Electric.
