1991: Some Context for Civilian Review of PolicingListing last updated: September 15, 1998The appointment of Susan Eng to the Police Services Board, in the heat of the Junger Inquiry, coincided with the Jane Doe/Whitehead case coming to light in the media. Here are clippings about Eng's appointment.
These clippings establish the political climate. There was an anti-Eng campaign on the part of some politicians (those same kind of politicians are still around). There was "unusual" hostility displayed towards Eng. Articles on Norm Gardner are quite different in tone. These clippings provide some details about Susan Eng and the kind of ripple effect her appointment had. Public perception eventually changed about Eng. In one article she was referred to as having lost "her nerve," but when she was appointed we expected a revolution. See the Complete List of Junger/Whitehead News Stories!
