Help for prostitutes proposed

KAMLOOPS -- City officials and social agencies are proposing that recent increases in business-licence fees for escort agencies and body-rub parlors be used to help prostitutes get off the streets.

The business fees jumped to $3,000 from $192.50.

"It's quite a visionary step from city hall and the agencies in town," said AIDS worker Mary Ann Sandrelli.

"It will benefit the people working in the sex trade and the community itself."

Kamloops has also secured provincial and federal funding to finance the project.
