Death NoticesStewart, Fiona Mary -- Suddenly, at home on Saturday, October 19, 1996 of natural causes. She was 34. Fiona will be remembered by her chosen family and friends as a highly respected, courageous advocate for accessible housing and victims' rights for those on the margins of society. As a founding member of the Robin Gardner Voce Non-Profit Homes, she helped give a voice to women who have been victims of police violence and systemic injustice. She was also a founding member of Women Against Police Violence Against Women, and served on a number of boards of directors including the Federation of Metro Tenants Associations, Metro Tenants Legal Services, The Harbourfront Community Centre, and Harbour Channel Housing Co-operative where she lived. She was an active member of the Affordable Housing Action Group and her work with the Inclusive Neighbourhoods Campaign helped to legalize apartments in houses. Fiona touched so many lives and completed so much in so little time, we who love her will never forget her characteristic feisty exclaim "Give me strength!" Memorial services will be held at the Harbour Channel Housing Co-operative, 633 Lakeshore Blvd. West on Friday, November 8th at 6:00 p.m. A fund will be set up at Bread and Roses Credit Union for the establishment of a human rights award in Fiona's name.
