New Westminster

New Westminster city council was told this week it should resign over a failure to deal with drugs, prostitution and crime in the downtown area.

"I'm tired of seeing teenage boys and girls punching needles in their arms," said resident Lew Stoddard, who appeared before council. "I'm tired of seeing teenage girls selling their bodies to prostitution.

"If you're not providing the leadership you were elected to provide, then apologize to the citizens, step down and let someone more qualified lead the way."

Stoddard's comments angered Mayor Helen Sparkes. "What you have to say isn't true. We're all working very hard and I take objection to your statements."
