Priest defrocked after leaving family for stripper

NICOSIA -- A Greek Orthodox priest who left his family for a stripper was defrocked Thursday by the Holy Synod of the Cyprus Church.

The affair is the latest scandal to hit the church following allegations that a high-ranking cleric, Bishop Chrysanthos of Limassol, is involved in fraud running into the millions of dollars.

A statement by the Synod said Father Papyiannis was stripped of his standing in the church after confessing to the charges.

The synod was also expected to consider a report by a committee of three bishops who have investigated the fraud allegations against Chrysanthos. Police are also investigating the fraud case.
